Survive and Thrive focuses on suicide risk prevention and mental health support for men.
It is a free in-person or online course available to teams of staff and volunteers working in community cafes, food banks and front-line support roles in Leeds.
Survive and Thrive develops skills that will help support men to improve their mental health and reduce suicide risk. The course is also designed to boost the well-being of service providers and volunteers. We usually come to your premises to work with your team or run sessions on Zoom.
The course content is flexible depending on your needs, but the main themes we cover are:
- Men: Risks and Opportunities: Sometimes it's hard for men to connect and reach out for help. We look at what works for ourselves and others.
- What creates good mental health? Looking at ourselves, our communities and the evidence to understand what keeps us mentally healthy.
- Conversations that make a difference: Using listening skills to help people connect and see things in a different way.
- Signposting: Where and how? We look at the local services and support we can signpost users to, and how to make it easier for them.
- Dealing with risk: How to recognise signs of suicide risk and connect people to help.
- Supporting your own wellbeing: Keeping yourself safe and well when dealing with stressful situations.
The course gave me concrete ideas about responding to people positively, through signposting not offering my solutions, which is a revelation to me!
The active listening and compassionate attitude we learned has been incredibly important in building trust and helping people to help themselves.
The most useful thing was understanding that as volunteers we're a link in the chain. We don't have to carry the whole weight of someone feeling suicidal by ourselves.
